Frequently Asked Questions
Straightforward answers. No marketing language.
What is PlanckVPN?
PlanckVPN is an independent VPN app for iOS, built on the WireGuard protocol. It encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through secure servers, so your ISP can’t see where you’re going and the sites you visit can’t see your real IP address. There is no parent company, no investors, and no data sold to fund it. The free tier is ad-supported. The paid tier is subscription-funded. That’s the whole business model.
How does PlanckVPN protect my connection?
PlanckVPN uses WireGuard — an open-source VPN protocol that is faster and leaner than older protocols like OpenVPN or IKEv2, and has a codebase small enough to be meaningfully audited. WireGuard uses ChaCha20 for encryption and Noise protocol for key exchange. When you connect, your traffic travels through an encrypted tunnel to our servers. Your ISP sees only that you’re connected to a VPN — not where your traffic goes, not what DNS queries you make, not what sites you visit.
Does PlanckVPN log my activity?
No. We retain zero logs. That means no traffic logs, no DNS query logs, no IP address logs, and no connection timestamps. When you disconnect, there is no record of your session on our servers. We cannot hand over data we do not have.
Does a VPN make me anonymous?
No, and we won’t claim otherwise. A VPN hides your IP address from the sites you visit and prevents your ISP from seeing your browsing destinations. It does not make you anonymous. If you’re signed into Google or any other account, those services still know who you are. Cookies and browser fingerprinting work independently of your IP address. PlanckVPN improves your privacy. It does not eliminate your digital footprint.
Why does PlanckVPN ask for VPN configuration permission?
iOS requires explicit user approval before any app can create a VPN connection. This is a system-level requirement — no VPN app can bypass it. Granting this permission allows PlanckVPN to establish a WireGuard tunnel and route your traffic through our servers. PlanckVPN cannot access your personal data, files, messages, or anything outside of providing the VPN connection itself.
Why does iOS ask for Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode?
iOS requires device authentication when an app makes changes to your network settings. This prompt comes from Apple’s operating system, not from PlanckVPN. We don’t see it, receive any data from it, or control when it appears.
How do I connect and disconnect?
Tap the connect button in the app. Tap it again to disconnect. You can also view and manage your VPN connection status in iOS Settings under VPN.
Will PlanckVPN slow down my internet?
Some speed reduction is normal with any VPN — your traffic is being encrypted and routed through an additional server. WireGuard is designed to minimize this overhead, and in practice the impact is small for most users on most connections. Actual speed depends on your base connection, your location, and the distance to the server you’re connecting to. We don’t claim to be the fastest VPN. We don’t think that claim means much without a standardized methodology behind it.
Does PlanckVPN work on public Wi-Fi?
Yes, and this is one of the clearest use cases for a VPN. On public Wi-Fi — coffee shops, airports, hotels — your traffic is on a network you don’t control. PlanckVPN encrypts your connection so that other users on the same network cannot intercept your unencrypted traffic, and the network operator cannot log your browsing destinations.
What is the free tier and how is it funded?
The free tier is funded by ads served through Google AdMob. You watch a short ad before connecting, and that’s the exchange. No data is sold. No hidden monetization. The ad revenue funds the infrastructure. If you’d prefer no ads, the premium subscription removes them entirely.
What does the premium subscription include?
Premium removes all ads, gives you access to all server locations, enables Maximum Security mode and Ad Block mode, and provides priority routing. Subscriptions are available weekly ($2.99), monthly ($4.99), or yearly ($29.99 — equivalent to $2.49 per month). Billing is handled entirely through Apple. PlanckVPN never sees or stores your payment information.
How do subscriptions renew and cancel?
Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current billing period. To cancel, go to your iPhone’s Settings, tap your Apple ID, then Subscriptions, and select PlanckVPN. You can also manage this through the App Store directly.
Does PlanckVPN block ads?
Ad Block mode is available on the premium tier. It blocks ads and trackers at the DNS level, which means ad requests are dropped before they reach your device. This improves page load speed and reduces tracking across apps and browsers. Some ad-supported sites may not display content correctly when ad blocking is active.
Is my data shared with third parties?
No. PlanckVPN does not sell, rent, or share user data. The free tier serves ads through Google AdMob — Google’s ad platform operates according to Google’s own privacy policies, which you can review at google.com/policies/privacy. Beyond that, no user data leaves PlanckVPN’s infrastructure.
Who owns PlanckVPN?
PlanckVPN was founded by Kuzzat Altay and is incorporated in Virginia, United States. There is no parent company, no holding company, and no outside investors. We think ownership transparency matters for a service that handles your network traffic, which is why we say it plainly rather than burying it in a legal document.
Has PlanckVPN received any government requests for user data?
No. As of March 2026, PlanckVPN has never received a government request, court order, or legal demand for user data. We maintain an active warrant canary at planckvpn.com/transparency. If that status ever changes, the canary will reflect it.
Which devices are supported?
PlanckVPN currently supports iPhone and iPad running iOS and iPadOS. Additional platform support is something we’re working toward.
